Steve Jones, The School Bus Grouse Camp

A tight-knit brotherhood of falconers gathers for their annual late-autumn pilgrimage to "Grouse Camp" in a secret Wyoming valley. Established in 1997, the camp is a long-standing tradition where flying falcons at sage-grouse serves as the perfect excuse for deep friendship, communal dinners, and mutual support.

"The objective is to come here and be with friends... the grouse is sort of an excuse... it's about the people."

Steve JonesHe is a veteran falconer, a professional school bus driver (who built the camp's famous converted school bus camper), and one of the long-time cornerstone members of Grouse Camp.

The Brotherhood of the Sage

What started in 1997 with Steve Harris’s three homemade teepees has grown into a cherished annual tradition, now anchored by a custom-converted school bus camper. This year’s camp held profound emotional significance as the group rallied around co-founder Steve Harris. Due to severe health struggles, Steve could no longer drive, but his family traveled all the way from Texas to ensure he didn't miss the gathering. In a display of true camaraderie, the entire camp caravanned together to watch Steve fly his bird. The camp also celebrated milestones across generations—from a young pointer pup holding a perfect point to "Pinky," an incredible 23-year-old hybrid falcon, taking to the skies once again.
